The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs issued Notifi cation No. 23/2026 – Customs (N.T.) on 24 February 2026 under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The notifi cation amends the earlier Notifi cation No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.) by substituting Table-1, Table-2, and Table-3 that prescribe tariff values for specifi c imported goods under the Customs Act, 1962.
The amendment is made in exercise of powers under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act. While the statutory tables are formally replaced, the notifi cation largely preserves existing tariff values, indicating continuity rather than policy change. The revised tables come into force from 25 February 2026.
Under Table-1, tariff values for major edible oils and brass scrap remain unchanged. Crude palm oil continues at US$ 1086 per metric tonne, RBD palm oil at US$ 1088, other palm oil at US$ 1087, crude palmolein at US$ 1090, RBD palmolein at US$ 1093, other palmolein at US$ 1092, crude soybean oil at US$ 1202, and brass scrap of all grades at US$ 7391 per metric tonne. Each entry clearly notes that there is no change.
Table-2 deals with precious metals. The tariff value for gold, in specifi ed forms where benefi ts under Notifi cation No. 45/2025-Customs are availed, remains US$ 1624 per 10 grams. The tariff value for silver, including various specifi ed forms and subject to stated exclusions, is fi xed at US$ 2817 per kilogram. The notifi cation also clarifi es that silver jewellery, articles of silver, and foreign currency coins are excluded for valuation purposes.
Table-3 retains the tariff value of areca nuts at US$ 7020 per metric tonne, again with no change.
Overall, Notifi cation No. 23/2026 is an administrative update that substitutes valuation tables while maintaining existing tariff values, ensuring stability in customs assessment from late February 2026 onward.
